Wylam Brewery was founded in 2000 and since then has become one of the biggest players in the UK’s heavily competitive real ale market.

2016 is perhaps the most significant year in the evolution of Wylam as they leave their Heddon-on-the-Wall base and move to the Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park, Newcastle upon Tyne.

As well as housing their entire brewery operation, the new venue also serves as an event space and bar/kitchen, taking Wylam into new markets and creating a unique offering in Newcastle city centre.

Ahead of the move TAC were approached in late 2015 to rebrand Wylam Brewery, create a new website and support the transition to their new home.

Supporting Wylam Brewery’s expansion

It was important to acknowledge Wylam’s evolution from a brewery into a destination and a well-known name in the real ale industry. Their new home in Exhibition Park further expands their offering it was critical the new brand could reflect this.

We audited Wylam’s current position in the market, researching customer wants and needs. With this we developed a new awareness and tone of voice that was carried throughout the whole brand.

The result was a new mission statement; to be known for ‘gatherings and celebrations’ and a brand promise of ‘infusing unique experiences with our passion for great beer and food’.

Developing the brand

During the process particular importance was placed on conveying the brand’s key values of Quality and Heritage.

We began by researching Wylam’s history and products. The brewery was set up by friends and it is important that the brand maintains a feeling of warmth despite now having an international reach.

Our aim was to reflect these stories while keeping the identity relevant and taking inspiration from their new home. The symbol itself was formed from the architectural drawings of The Palace of Arts. Structural drawings of the Grand Hall were reconstructed to create the ‘W’ and the boldness reflects the building’s aesthetics.

The results

The result of our work with Wylam Brewery is a contemporary brand that stands out in the marketplace and effectively supported a successful launch in their new venue.

The adaptable nature of the identity means it has impact in both large-scale applications, such as signage and livery, and small-scale applications, on menus and beer mats.

We all attended the opening night in The Palace of Arts and it was a pleasure to see the results of our work with Wylam contribute to a great night in a unique venue.
