Dementia Care is a registered charity devoted to providing specialist care, support and advice to people with dementia and other neurological disorders including stroke related illnesses and Parkinson’s disease.

Founded in 1993, the charity has worked tirelessly to make the care and support to dementia sufferers and their families as accessible as ever and in doing so, required their website to act as a portal to all that is available to enable care to both sufferers and their families to be easier.

In late 2015 we launched a new website and internal document management system for the charity.

The brief

Dementia Care’s old website was outdated, was difficult to use, wasn’t optimised for mobile devices and lacked flow. Its inflexible platform proved increasingly difficult to use; the charity struggled to update content as and when required.

We were commissioned to design and develop a website that would encompass three key purposes: to be a place where family, friends and patients could come and readily access the services offered by Dementia Care in the North East, to act as a leading resource on dementia for the UK as a whole and finally, be able to support the charity’s fundraising efforts.

What we did

With many visitors to the Dementia Care’s website either experiencing the very early stages of dementia or perhaps worried that they may have the disease, usability and accessibility was at the forefront of our approach.

Our research into the disease and user testing focus groups we ran highlighted how crucial it was that we created a bold, vibrant website that was easy to use and able to present information in a clear, intuitive way.

Using WordPress as a Content Management System, Dementia Care can now seamlessly manage their content and communicate with their audience.

Additionally, we developed a bespoke document management plugin specifically for the project, providing a single point of reference for Dementia Care’s staff and trustees.

The results

Since the new website launched in early November 2015, monthly visitor numbers have more than doubled, helping Dementia Care to reach a wider audience.

Improvements to usability, accessibility and flow have resulted in greater engagement with visitors, more exposure on social media and huge improvements in search performance.

Previously receiving very insignificant organic search traffic, the website is now performing well for all popular dementia-related search terms in the UK.
